The games are focused on a collection of five delightfully crafted characters who set about attempting to make their world more interesting. Seeking something more than numbers, they go about inventing the alphabet. THE NUMBERLYS AMAZON SERIESĪnd, suddenly the Numberlys get all Letterly and we engage in a series of interactive games that help the characters to build and shape every letter of the alphabet from A to Z. The games are cleverly designed in terms of visuals, but are not particularly groundbreaking in regards to game dynamics, and after a while the games start to repeat themselves. We don't get 26 individual games for each letter of the alphabet.Īfter this section, we come to a narrative conclusion, which is most satisfying as it again captures the whimsy and wit that Moonbot Studios does so well. They have the ability to tell stories that are as good as the best of them. The concept and execution of this storyline is damn good and I take my hat of to the creativity of the concept. The animation and their visuals alone make this app worth the purchase and I understand why they chose to go in the direction of creating the app in the way they have with the ABC element. But as an adult reader of this app it was disappointing and as a child development researcher I think this app misses the mark in a way that many apps aimed at children do. The Numberlys is effectively an ABC app bookended by an amazing narrative opening and closing inspired by the work of Fritz Lang. The issue for me was that the ABC section of the app was way too long, it is a narrative black hole. ![]() We know that after we play the D game, then there will be E game and I found myself wondering: "Do I really have to do this all the way to Z?" The ABC games are great for younger children: they have appropriate prompts and the audio celebrations of the characters and the little animation sequences between the games would appeal to pre-schoolers who are usually your target market for ABC apps. ![]() The games may be a little complex if children get to that section of the app (I'd have to do some testing to be sure). But, I'm not convinced that three and four year olds will appreciate the story enough to get to the section that seems to be designed especially for them. They will be clicking the home button and heading elsewhere because the witty narrative and brilliant animation won't impress them. And on the other hand, a six year old who may engage with the opening narrative won't particularly find the game dynamics or learning their ABCs that enticing. I love the look, the feel, the humor and the charter development. SHREVEPORT, LA - The Numberlys has joined Amazon Video’s lineup of new kids pilots for its 2015 fall pilot season, exclusively on Amazon Video in the US, UK, Germany, Austria and Japan. While Ben’s beliefs tend to be rigid and unyielding, the film takes a more nuanced look at his life, at its joys and its consequences.Īt times Captain Fantastic (2016) can feel like a liberal arts crash course. This patriarch, Ben (Viggo Mortensen), is ultra left-leaning and believes unflinchingly in honesty, scholarship, and self-sufficiency in nature. The film struck my fancy on first glance not only because it reminded me of people and ways of life which I came across whilst living in Australia, but also because of my current position at the beginning of my teacher training and the insight it gave into childhood, education, and the wonderful hope for raising children to take on the world as “philosopher kings”, bringing power to the people and sticking it to the man.Quick Answer : Captain Fantastic (2016) follows a man who has chosen to raise his entire family in the wilderness, in part because of his complex belief system. When watching ‘Captain Fantastic’ I smiled thinking of my barefooted bohemian friends. ![]() In opening my mind to other ways of educating oneself and of interacting with the world, I took in new perspectives and had a re-think, which I know was a very healthy and beneficial process to go through. The culture-clash when I first encountered some of the people in this hippie paradise subsided when I let my guard down and stopped feeling like I had to defend myself and the way that I knew life to be. ‘Captain Fantastic’ reminded me of people I met and befriended living in Byron Bay, Australia where many people choose to try to live off grid and ‘alternative’ lifestyles. I left the cinema with divided sympathies and my head a whirr of thought and wonder. The film is an exposition of the extent to which one can truly remove oneself from social norms and yet see the bigger picture and relate to world as a whole through negotiation and open mindedness of what is right. ![]() ‘Captain Fantastic is not a sugary sweet ‘hippie’ tale of peace, love, and harmony and I think that the writer/director Matt Ross thoughtfully explores the adventure and possibility that life can take you on. Is Ben Cash and the children’s sense of reality skewed, or are we as an audience being asked to wonder what makes our accepted social reality ‘the right way’ to view the world? The film is soulful but also grates on you, you leave feeling divided about Cash’s parenting and the extent to which his love and determination borders manic extremism and potentially abusive situations, such as creating a ‘mission’ for the family to “free the food” from a supermarket things are unravelling at the seams and the Cash family way of life entirely is called into question during the whole film. We really see their natural spiritedness through their creativity and musicality where in one particularly poignant scene the family sing and dance around a funeral pyre on a cliff top to celebrate life, death, and love. The children are raised to fend and fight for themselves, their thinking is informed and highly intelligent because they are challenged and engaged, reading Middlemarch and discussing Marxism and Noam Chomsky round the fire at night. Love and the extremities to which man will go to cultivate and defend what he believes to be right and important are central to this film. Ben Cash is either “the best father in the world or the worst” and both are possibilities as the film unfolds and we watch as the ideologies and honest truths of the Cash family life are challenged by necessary and unavoidable clashes with modern social norms and expectations. The film is raw and thought provoking, it nods to the human darkness and the teetering knife edge of sanity (a nod to the mother’s bipolar disorder) and crafts a tale of independent, stripped back to nature life where a father is raising his children to be “philosopher kings”. To watch the trailer for ‘Captain Fantastic’ having seen the film last night, I am reminded of the poignant beauty of the endeavour which Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife set out to accomplish by raising their family off-grid and by a very different set of rules which challenge twenty-first century Western sensibilities. ![]() ![]() ![]() John Waterman is a very talented young climber from the suburbs of D.C., whose drive to climb dangerous slopes intensifies as he loses his mind, and who eventually embarks on a suicidal assent of Denali, and is never heard from again.
